How Can We Survive in a Recession? Welcome to our Six Week Money Series!

Growing Money We hear in the news often about the plaguing financial issues, the housing market, unemployment, and a recession. However, we rarely hear anyone discussing the tools to survive in a recession. Most people are trying to figure the answer to this question. How Can We Survive and Thrive in a Recession?  I do not have all the answers but some suggestions that can help you from my experience. The key to solving a problem is finding the obstacles. You can and will survive in a recession. The key elements to surviving in a recession is to budget, let go of anything that you do not need (purge), purchase items that are needed (not wanted), become a savvy shopper, and keep cash on hand. I will continue to offer other suggestions in the upcoming weeks.  These suggestions will entail finding ways to generate other sources of income, creating a strong savings plan, and to enjoy the pleasurable events or attributes of life. These are purely suggestions. These suggestions warrant no guarantees. These are strictly opinion based by the writer.

For the next few weeks, I will begin my “Money Series”. Today, I will discuss budgeting. In the upcoming weeks, I will discuss issues concerning money and personal remedies for surviving and thriving in a recession. Please review my suggestions. Please feel free to use what works for you and ignore any suggestions that may not work for your life. First, develop a budget. I suggest you figure out your monthly income, your expenses, and your spending habits. Develop a spread sheet and create a budget. I know… What is truly a budget? Well, for most people a budget is non-existent. We normally spend without any idea of how or what we are spending. The act of spending often leads us to money issues. Most of us, do not have a money issue but a spending issue

We have to learn to allocate money and save. The ideal way to change your spending habits is to track your spending. It is hard to budget if you do not know what you are spending. I was told by an financial advisor to create a “spend journal”. A spend journal is a journal that documents your spending habits for thirty days. You will able to evaluate exactly the amount you spend on gas, food, dining, etc. After, you complete your spend journal examine your spending habits. After you examine your spending habits, then you allocate funds. First, write a list of fixed bills. Fixed bills are bills like your mortgage/rent, daycare, car payment/insurance, etc. Then, write a list of bills that are ever changing. These bills are gas for your car,dry cleaning, etc. Then, write a list of miscellaneous expenses per month like dining, shopping, entertainment, etc.

Then, create your budget. Go to mint.com, set up a budget using Excel, or get an account with PNC . PNC has a personal account that allows you to view your spending/savings habits via internet. This account will allow you to set up a budget, track  exactly what you are spending and saving.  Once you set up your budget, you can begin to get rid of or reduce your spending habits. For example, do you buy lunch everyday? If so, could you bring lunch instead of purchasing lunch. Let’s look at the situation. You buy lunch on an average of $8.00 a day about five times a week. This is $40.00 for the week and $160.00 for the month. During the year, you have spent $1920.00 eating lunch. Therefore, you can reduce your spending habit by purchasing groceries and preparing lunch. You can treat yourself to eating lunch out once a week at $8.00. You will save $128 for the month. Take the $128 savings from your old food allowance and create a bank account. At the end of the year, you will have $1536 from your old ”lunch habit”. Creating a budget will help you reduce your spending habits. Imagine that you could eliminate two or three “spending habits” and save yourself $3000 or $4000 a year.

This is the one of the keys to surviving in a recession. The market, your job,  and your income may not change but your cash flow can change with the decisions we make and changing our spending habits. Please think outside of the box. We have to began to change our habits because it affects our families and ultimately our community. One change leads to another change. Financial literacy is our key the future. So start today… Get a journal, document your spending habits, and create a budget. Change is constant and begins with you.

I am a Fan of Eric Roberson!

Eric Roberson

I have been listening to Eric Roberson for years. I am a music lover… A real music lover. I love underground music. I listen to Eric Roberson, Julie Dexter, Nikka Costa, Portishead, DJ Krush, and many “unknown” artists that are not featured on the radio. These artists are well known in the real soul/underground music scene. I am hoping that I can connect more people to the underground circuit. We need to understand that real music feeds the soul. We need words of love, encouragement, upliftment, and purification.

I want to introduce you to Eric Roberson. If you do not know him, you will! I have seen him at least six times in concert. “Talented” is the word. He is a singer, songwriter, and  producer. Eric Roberson is a graduate of Howard University. He has been writing for artists such as Musiq, Dwele, Jill Scott, Vivian Green, and Will Downing.  He is an amazing artist for many reasons. The real music scene has disappeared but a few soldiers of the true soul movement still exist. Eric Roberson is still keeping music soulful and consistent. I recommend one of my favorite cds, “Left”. I love it. Please check his music out on youtube.com. Please visit: http://youtu.be/mqGE65-elfc and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qW6iQK-w0dE.  My recommendation is to check out a show and buy a CD. Real music lovers, please follow this blog to find more about “Real” music. Check out some of his upcoming shows. He will be in New York performing in the December and January.

Dr. Iya Sade provides Holistic Health Services for the Community

We want to welcome Dr. Iya Sade to Na-Klectic. She provides an array of holistic health services and hair artistry. Dr. Iya Sade ( AKA ” Sade”) has been in wholistic health as long as she could remember.  She reminisces to when her great grandmother would have her picking dandelion greens and poke root in the back yard to cook and eat (unknowing then of the medicinal properties).  She started acquiring her formal knowledge about twelve years ago while working at a small neighborhood health food store.  Dr. Sade was forced to get an understanding of foods and supplements because inquisitive customers wanted products and answers. So she had to get a clearer understanding.

In seeking information for others, Dr. Sade digested what she learned and applied it to her own health.  She struggled with her weight and other health issues but was determined to turn her life around.  When Dr. Sade was asked by others for advice, she happily shared the knowledge she acquired.  Her personal quote is: “When you become a healer it is because healers need to be healed”.  She converted into vegetarianism ten years ago and veganism two years ago.  She has extensive spiritual healing experience.

Dr. Iya Sade is a Second Degree Reiki Practitioner, ADS, and is a Certified Holistic Health Counselor Naturopathy. She has training in HIV/AIDS awareness.  Additionally, she is a fifteen year veteran licensed cosmetologist in Ohio and Maryland.  Dr. Sade is a master stylist and beauty consultant with a special focus on natural hair & skin care. She has taught continuing education classes in Cleveland, Ohio, at the World Natural Health and Beauty show in Atlanta, GA, and The Baltimore Natural Hair Expo in Baltimore,MD. She will continue to educate and beautify the masses because of her passion to transform people.  She currently resides in DC Metro area of Maryland with her husband and two children.  She is looking to expand her healing arts and teaching career. Dr. Iya Sade is a blessing to Na-Klectic. We look forward to customers and staff utilitizing her services.

Do you have Dry Hair in the Winter? Ask the Experts for advice! We have the remedy.

My recommendation for maintaining natural hair in the cold winter months is to apply natural hair oil such as; olive oil, almond oil, or vitamin E. I recommend hot oil treatments for thirty minutes once every week or two weeks depending upon the dryness of the hair and scalp.  Natural oils will reduce shedding and breakage. In addition, I recommend wrapping your natural hair in a silk scarf prior to placing a winter wool hat on the head. Winter hats tend to cause shedding. In addition, please eat healthy balanced meals. We tend to believe that breakage descends from the products that are being applied to the hair. However, lack of proper nutrition and low water intake can cause breakage. My last recommendation in the winter months is to increase water intake, eat more vegetables, and exercise. The hair tends to become more brittle in the winter, so protect your hair and do not apply a lot of heat or use petroleum based products. Natural products and a balanced diet is the key to to healthy hair in the Winter.

I am looking for Sisters and Brothers who wore Afros in the 60′s and 70′s.  I would like to talk to you about how and why you sported your ‘Fro.  If you are interested in a conversation about the times and the hair, get in touch at gloria.rease@thenaturalhaircaredirectory.com. Black Natural Hair Movement

I am so excited to be a part of this movement — the return of brothers and sisters to their natural roots, literally.  Maybe it’s just me, but it seems that everyone is talking natural hair: locs, braids, twists, Sister Locks, Bantu Knots, you name it!  It seems that we are embracing the goodness of our natural tresses.  As a product of the 60′s and an aspirant of the “Angela Davis ‘Fro”, I am more than happy to see the return of natural hair.  In fact, I am ecstatic!

A return to natural hair is important for a number of reasons.  First of all, it breaks our dependency on individuals and businesses outside of our community and helps to increase the economic viability of African American businesses and communities.

Secondly, natural hair is healthier.  Chemicals and weaves on our heads is damaging to our well-being and our self-esteem.  Eventually, chemicals will permanently eat away the fragile temple hair and damages our hair follicles.  Chemical-free hair is beautiful, versatile and liberating.

So, my Sisters and Brothers, continue to move toward embracing your natural beauty, celebrate who you really are and strive for liberation from communities that do not respect us as individuals but gladly accept our hard earned money. Be set free!

Naturally yours,
Gloria

The importance of Relaxation and Yoga in Society

We recognize that stress is the leading cause of many diseases. In American society working long hours, eating poorly, and reducing family time is status quo. In other areas of the world, relaxation is key. People take long lunches, long vacations, and spend quality time with family. Americans should recognize the importance of a balanced and healthy lifestyle. We need to eat balanced meals, exercise, find a spiritual connection with God and family, and enjoy life. My recommendation is yoga. Yoga changed my life. I was able to reduce my weight, increase stamina, and reduce my stress level.  It is great for breathing, calming the mind, and healing the body. We want to extend an invitation to the Na-Klectic family to try yoga. Our former salon Assistant Manager, Katika (Tika) Mercer is an amazing yoga instructor. We want to show her our love and support.

Please visit http://www.lifelinepoweryoga.com/. The Beginner Series has taken off!! A FREE class is being offered on Saturday 11/6 @ 9:45am. In addition, a FREE class will be offered on Thursday, 11/4 @ 7:00pm. Next week, a third class will be offered to the series…Tuesday/Thursday 7:00 – 8:00pm. Please share this with family and friends. We want to change society from being unhealthy to balanced individuals that are healthy mentally and spiritually. Please check the website for additional classes or visit http://www.facebook.com/yogifreedom.
